Justin Spiers

Justin Spiers photographic work explores tensions between the hidden and familiar, the unknown and the space in between.

In recent works, the Ōtepoti based artist has used his “camera to expose the screens we build to cushion our objectification and brutal oppression of the natural world. By way of accentuating the structures through which we unwittingly look, he underlines the frequently unnoticed artifice of photography and the staggeringly asymmetrical division of power which accompanies it.” (Review of Spiers exhibition, ‘The sides of my intent’, by Franky Strachan)

In a departure from this theme, his new works explore more personal and forgotten intimate spaces.
