Denise Porter-Howland

Denise Porter-Howland is a Tāmaki Makaurau based artist.

Through the gathering of ideas and imagination, human experiences and conditions are explored and presented in ceramic form.  Abandoned and discarded objects emerge as reflections of relevance and beauty, every piece evolves as part of a story.

Initially studying fine arts in London, the desire to create three dimensionally was honored and the natural drive towards ceramics became the chosen medium.  Eleventeen Ceramics is the platform from which a body of work could grow. The concepts are recognised not as unique experiences but open to many personal interpretations from the viewer.

Practice/Materials/Process:

All sculptures and objects are hand-built, every small piece has its individual print or shape.

The essence of work is considered emotional and always created in direct response to a feeling or an experience.  Without any pre drawing or mapping, an organic unfolding of ideas develop into form and sculpture. There’s always a trust and a knowing - The path is set as soon as the clay is held.

Work is completed in white mid fire clay and mid fire glaze. Enamelling may be included when finer detail is required.
